If you've only seen Rome from above, you may have missed half of the experience! There is a whole city underground waiting to be explored. Visit the subterraneans of Rome with our excellent guides. Catacombs can be added as option.
An entire city is hidden underneath modern Rome. It is the ancient city buried underground that we explore on this tour. Our expert archeologists will take you down to crypts, cemeteries, sewers, mysterious temples in a unique fascinating adventure.
The tour starts from Piazza Barberini with the Triton’s fountain designed by Bernini. Our guide will take you to the Crypt of the Capuchins and its creepy collection of bones, skulls, pelvises of more than 3000 friars.
You will then reach the church of St. Clemens and its subterraneans. The medieval church was built above a IV century basilica that in turn was founded over a rich ancient roman house and a mythraic temple.
You will then follow the Papal way to the Basilica of St. John in Lateran, Rome’s oldest church. It is the city cathedral and houses exquisite medieval mosaics, renaissance frescoes and the tombs of many popes.
The tour will end by the Ancient City Walls that date back to 275 AD.
Advance booking is strongly advisable! Our tours sell out well in advance and our top-rated tour guides might not be available at the last minute.
I arranged a tour for myself and a few work colleagues for an afternoon tour of the Rome Underground. We had the pleasure of touring with Rachel who was an excellent guide. She not only told us what we were seeing but also many stories about the Roman culture and the significance of the varous archeological findings. Highly recommended for those who want to see a few sights that most toursts do not have the chance to visit and experience. Bravo!
