Tour details

Ostia is one of the largest excavated Ancient cities in the world. It used to be the main seaport of the Roman Empire, the gateway to Rome for the grains, the marble and other important products that were imported by sea from Egypt, Spain and other rich provinces.

You must visit Ostia at least once in a lifetime because it is like jumping back in time to see how the Romans lived.

The streets, the shops, the temples, the facilities, the commercial and political buildings of Ostia are still very well preserved due to the fact that the city had been covered by silt and sand for centuries before being excavated.

We will see a spectacular original 2nd century theatre still in use. We will explore the thermal baths and amazingly intact public toilets! We will walk into an Ancient restaurant, a laundry, a warehouse to see authentic wine and olive oil containers that are 2000 years old.

You will have an expert licensed private guide just for you. She will use visual modern tools to reconstruct the ruins and bring them to life.

The archaeological site is vast and without the guide you will waste time, energy and miss so much on your own! You can reach Ostia by train or we can arrange a private transfer for you from your accommodation in Rome.

You will love your Ostia tour!

  • Duration: the tour can be half-day (approximately 3 hours) or full-day (7 hours with one hour lunch break: there is the chance to eat inside the archaeological area at the restaurant)
  • When: everyday except Monday
  • No-lines policy: skip the long entrance lines with our local tour guides.

Although you can visit Ostia Antica yourself, taking a private tour is much better to avoid wasting your time and to visit the most important things. The archaeological site is vast and much less crowded with tourists than Pompeii. Our tour guide, Francesca was great, very knowledgable and funny. We will absolutely sugget this tour to our friends!
